How Good Quality Seat Cushions Can Make Your Life Better

Have you ever wondered what makes a sofa so cloud-like? Whenever you consider buying a sofa, you may not think too much about what’s inside good quality seat cushions. Any furniture expert will tell you that the fillings are one of the most important aspects of a good sofa. Companies that make sofas use various materials for their fillings, such as feathers, foam, and fibres.

Here at Chill Sofas, we know a thing or two about what makes a seat comfortable. Today we’ll share some of that knowledge with you to make a more informed decision the next time you go furniture shopping. In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how good quality seat cushions can make your life better.

What Are Foam Wrapped In Fibre Seat Cushions?

There are two primary components of every cushion: the material inside the cover, also called the cushion construction, and the cover itself, also called the slip or the upholstery.

The cushion construction might be the most critical part of your entire sofa. Sure, its legs, weight distribution, material, and aesthetic are integral components. But what you buy a seat for is the sitting experience, and cushion construction defines that experience.

Foam is the most common material for cushion construction, with fibre and feathers trailing close behind. There are two types of foam for upholstery: high-density and medium-density. High-density tends to be longer-lasting, making it ideal for mattress toppers and sofa cushions. Medium-density is better for furniture that sees less use, like headboards and accent pillows.

Fibre is a prevalent upholstery material. The “fibre wrapping” process uses a taut fibre sleeve as the upholstery, with foam cushions as the construction. Fibre is a robust, durable material that holds up to frequent use—like sitting and laying down.

Why Wrap Foam in Fibre for Seat Cushions?

If you’re going to be inserting the cushion construction into a zippered or buttoned-off upholstery, why would you wrap it in fibre first?

There are many advantages to fibre wrapping foam cushions. From aesthetics to comfort and protection, here are the best reasons to fibre wrap your sofa cushions.

Enhanced Foam Longevity

Fibre wrapping your cushions helps extend their lifespan. The lifespan can depend on many factors, such as the chair material, the country of origin, manufacture date, and climate. However, with all these factors, the average sofa can last somewhere between 3 and 15 years.

If we’re brutally honest, most sofas do not last more than five years. One way you can help keep your chair structurally intact is by investing in fibre-wrapped cushions, which hold up better to use than unwrapped cushions.

Wrinkle Prevention

If your cushions consist of unwrapped feathers or fibres, or even foam, slight creases and wrinkles will show up in the upholstery. With down, the feathers may even leak through the fabric.

But if you wrap your cushions in fibre, you’re guaranteed an even and smooth surface on all sides—and a less irritating experience!

Fibre wrapping also expands and fluffs out the appearance of cushions. It’s a bit counterintuitive since one would expect wrapping to contract the size of cushions.

However, on the contrary, fibre wrapping fills out the look of any sofa beautifully because it helps the filling retain its shape.

What Are Foam Wrapped in Dacron Seat Cushions?

Dacron is a type of polyester fibre fabric created by a company called DuPont. When polyester first entered the scene and started getting popular in the 1950s, DuPont improved upon the polyester formula by resolving its drawbacks.

Foam cushions wrapped in Dacron will usually use high-density foam for the construction and Dacron for the upholstery. It’s the go-to choice for people who value function and practicality.

Why Wrap Foam in Dacron for Seat Cushions?

Dacron fabric improves upon the polyester formula in three primary ways, each of which makes it excellent for wrapping around foam chair cushions:

Mould and Stain Resistance

Generic polyester fibres are strong, but they have one fatal flaw: they’re vulnerable to liquids. Polyester isn’t like suede or leather in that fluid contact will ruin the integrity of the fabric.

But polyester can degrade with fluid exposure, and it certainly stains. Prolonged contact with fluids can even lead to mould growth, which you don’t have to worry about with Dacron wrapping. Dacron wrapping will repel fluid contact, keeping your sofa safe and dry.

Hypoallergenic Properties

Dacron is a hypoallergenic material, meaning it’s exceedingly rare that contact with the wrapping would cause an allergic reaction.

If someone in your family is prone to allergic reactions when they come into contact with things like grass or pet dander, consider getting Dacron wrapped cushions.

Increased Durability

Fibre-wrapped cushions are undoubtedly durable. But Dacron takes durability to a whole new level. In addition to the fluid and allergen resistance, Dacron is also resistant to general wear and tear.

You can get up and off the chair one hundred times an hour, and your Dacron-wrapped cushions will barely show it!
